Manchester United are ready to offer a new contract to Serbian international Nemanja Vidic.
According to British daily newspaper Daily Mirror, after days of speculations and latest luring offers from Barcelona, Inter Milan and AC Milan, as well as words from Vidic’s own agent, Manchester United officials have began to worry their finest player of last season may well be on his way out of the Premier League winning side.
In a bid to keep the reliable defender, Manchester United are expected to lay an offer on the table that will guarantee Vidic weekly wages of as much as €115,000, instead of the current amount of €70,000. Under his ongoing contract terms, Vidic earns €3.6m annually, which United are prepared to raise to €5.8m. The new deal will have Vidic extend his stay for one more year, with the contract expiring in 2012. One more reason why Manchester United have decided to hold on to the Serb are the recent frequent injuries of the other key central defender Rio Ferdinand. The England international missed a part of the previous season, while he has been hampered by the same injury in the opening weeks of the new season. He has missed the first two Premier League matches and is likely to be sidelined for the next three due to a thigh muscle tear. Irish international Jonny Evans, who also plays in the same defending role, will have to undergo an ankle surgery when a suitable moment comes for United. Until that time, Evans will be available to manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The Manchester United manager has clearly said Vidic will not be allowed to leave the club in the summer transfer window under no circumstances. It was plain to see how much Manchester United have benefited from Vidic’s return to action. The Red Devils had a midweek game at Burnley with Vidic missing, and were beaten 1-0 on the night. Only three days on, at Wigan on Saturday, Manchester United had Vidic at disposal for the entire 90 minutes of the game and went on to thrash the home side 5-0.
